He's a Good Kid

So, I thought Daniel was still asleep earlier.   I went in their room to find him reclined on his MADE bed, where he'd been reading The Hobbit for half an hour!    Now he's mowing.   I like this kid!   :)

A Special Day

Sunday was a very special day in our little family!    In a packed church, in front of family and friends, Grant was baptized by his dad.   We are so proud of our little monkey, who is growing into a sweet young man.   His moments of goofy nervousness added to the celebration - like pretending he was swimming!  But that's ok, because that's how God has wired Grant.   And since accepting Christ, I've seen his love for God's word grow stronger and that thrills me to no end!

Four other children were baptized too, so it was a special day for our whole church!   One of Grant's best buddies followed him in baptism and they couldn't help having some fun before it all started!

God has big plans for both of these boys who have recently given their hearts to Christ.  I look forward to watching how God molds them into Godly young men!

Boy Moms Link Up

Although this blog about raising boys is fairly new, I'm not new to being a boy mom.   I know that one of the things I couldn't survive without is other boy moms.   We need each other's encouragement and advice.  The connection has been invaluable to me the past 12+ years!   So I'm linking up today at Kelly's blog to check out what's going on in the lives of other moms of boys.

Like many boy moms, I never dreamed I would only raise boys.  But God had other plans and I'm so very glad He did.  Now, almost 13 years later, it's hard to imagine having a princess in the house.   I enjoy being the only girl!   I'm crazy about these loving, hilarious, zany, unpredictable, rambunctious little men who are tweens.  It's an exciting time to be their mom!   They're maturing and growing into the young men God wants them to be.  It requires a lot of prayer and patience on our parts as their mom and dad.   But I've learned that if I will keep feeding MY spirit, He will take the overflow from my life to shape theirs.

So, I look forward to reading about other families.   Let's hear it for the boys!

Swords, Light Sabers, and Arrows

Once upon a time, my boys played "Narnia" with their swords,  then they moved onto fighting the Dark Side with their light sabers.   Today, they're in the backyard fighting in The Hungers games with makeshift bows and arrows.  I love being a boy mom!

How Boys Learn

"Do not train boys to learning by force and harshness, but lead them by what amuses them, so that they may better discover the bent of their minds." - Plato

Taking Time to Play

I have a friend whose son just celebrated his first birthday. Oh, he's such a little man in his plaid shorts, toddling around, flirting with the ladies at church. This friend has become a wonderful mother, just like I knew she would be. Like me, she waited a while before becoming a mother, and like me, she isn't always sure about this "boy mom" thing. I really enjoy being able to encourage her and share with her some of the things others have told me, like "this too shall pass".

Another bit of advice I got when my boys were younger (and it seemed all I ever did was correct, train, clean up after, and feed these little guys) was to take time to play. Don't just let them run through the sprinklers fully clothed, but run out there with them. Play the Wii with them, even though you have no clue what the point of the game is. Engage with them. Connect with them through sillyness and playfulness. It doesn't take much time and the rewards are huge!

Yesterday, on the way home from school, the boys and I cranked David Crowder up loud and acted like fools, singing and "dancing" as we traveled down the road. It was fun-ny! We giggled and goofed off and it felt so very good. Later, I was telling my young friend about it, letting her know that the day is coming when she would enjoy her son in a whole new way. Her face lit up with anticipation, thinking about being so silly and undignified with her sweet boy.

I'm thankful for my fun-loving, playful boys who still get a kick out of their mom's occasional sillyness.

I dig this one

Being a Boy Mom

12 years ago I had no clue what I was getting into, no idea of the blessings and laughter that were coming my way. As the mother of an infant son, I knew nothing about raising little men. I don't think I had ever been inside a sporting goods store, and I certainly knew nothing about Star Wars or building with Legos. What qualified me to have such an important job?

But God always knows just what He's doing!

This blog is about my journey as a mother of boys; a place to share what I've learned, what I'm learning, and what I desperately need to learn. Most importantly, it's a place where I can brag on my sons and celebrate them!

Let's hear it for the boys!
